DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — De Pere residents who are looking to off-load their yard waste will have to make a change. The city’s old site will be closed, giving way to a new facility.
De Pere residents are used to taking yard waste to 655 Rockland Rd. That site was previously shared with the town of Ledgeview.
“As the town of Ledgeview continued to grow, they decided to go and build their own facility for their residents. So, that gave us an opportunity to kind of rethink what we’re doing and develop something that is specific to the city of De Pere residents,” said Tony Fietzer, city of De Pere Street Superintendent.
The new site, at 2005 Commerce Dr., is right by the old facility. Unlike at Rockland Rd., the site will be protected by a fence with gated entry.
Residents must complete a free registration to receive an access code.
“Really it’s just name, address, phone number, vehicle description and we just verify that you’re a city resident and once you are verified your code will become active. It’s a six-digit code. Punch it in, hit pound and the gate will open for you to access,” said Fietzer.
As of late last week, the city of De Pere said more than 1,000 people were registered. However, several people didn’t know about the change.
“I have not registered for the facility, mainly because this is the first I’d heard of it. I wasn’t aware until stopping over here and this is when I found out it was closing. So, it’s on my to-do list now,” said John Ogard.
“I did not know that they were having a new facility, and I did not know about any kind of registration,” said Geri Noack.
Along with Ogard, Noack said she’d register to use the new facility too.
“It helps a lot of people first of all, I mean, bring your yard waste to the facility. It’s great. You can get compost. That’s great,” said Noack.
“Having the facility available to the residents but not available to any person that just happens to drive by and wants to mystery dump their stuff, on balance, that’s probably a good thing,” said Ogard.
Unlike the old site, now the yard waste facility will close from Dec. 15 to March 15.
Starting Saturday, June 27th, the old facility on Rockland Rd. will house a temporary rubbish and bulk waste drop off site.
That’s while the city renovates its municipal service center, which currently serves as the rubbish and bulk waste drop off site.
