(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) GENEVA, N.Y. – St. Norbert College’s season came to a heartbreaking end in a 2-1 loss to three-time defending national champion Hobart College, scoring a late goal in the third period before nearly scoring a second just before time expired in a NCAA Division III Quarterfinal game at The Cooler.
The Green Knights, who finish the season with a 22-7-2 record, were given a lifeline by Braydon Beahm at 16:45 in the third period to cut Hobart’s lead to one goal before being awarded a power-play with just over a minute remaining in regulation at 18:59. St. Norbert forced pressure with an extra attacker for the final push and came agonizingly close to another thrilling moment when Beahm’s redirected shot just going over the crossbar as time expired.
The two teams were held to a goalless stalemate in the first period, with the Green Knights having an opportunity on power play in the middle of the period to take the lead.
The Statesmen took the lead at 1:58 in the second period from Tanner Daniels on a breakaway wrist shot and added one more goal several minutes later at 8:35 when Connor Lally found the back of the net on a high-arcing shot.
The Green Knights were awarded a power play early in the third period but found no success till Beahm netted his 17th goal of the season off Calvin Hanson and Ethan Byrne helpers.
St. Norbert was outshot 30-23. Hunter Garvey made 28 saves for St. Norbert, 13 of which came in the third period as the Green Knights chased the lead. Damon Beaver made 22 saves for Hobart.
