(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – Maddy Skorupski showed out with a triple-double – 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, and Jenna Guyer scored her 1,000th career point to lead the Green Bay women’s basketball team past the Detroit Mercy Titans 81-57 at home Wednesday in the Barbasol Horizon League Championship First Round. Green Bay advances to the Semifinal and will play the winner of No. 5 Purdue Fort Wayne and No. 7 IU Indy on Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. CST.
In Guyer’s last game at the Kress Center, she finished with a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Carley Duffney added 14 points, and Meghan Schultz added 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
Led by Schultz’s four offensive rebounds, Green Bay did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 19 second-chance points.
The Green Bay defense held Detroit Mercy shooters to just 35.3-percent from the field. GB shot 46.4-percent from the field and 36.4-percent from three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team scored a bucket in the first three minutes until Guyer got the scoring started with the first four points of the game. GB built on that, going up 13-6 to start the game. The Titans cut into that lead before the first quarter was over at 17-13. Green Bay did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 17 points close to the basket.
GB kept that first-quarter lead intact before going on a 19-0 run starting at the 5:05 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Carley Duffney, to increase its lead to 44-23. The Titans added two points before the break, but the Phoenix still enjoyed a 44-25 advantage heading into halftime.
The Phoenix continued to cruise before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Duffney, to expand the lead further to 58-30 with 3:54 to go in the third. The Titans responded with a 9-3 lead to close out the third, but the Green & White still took a 62-39 lead into the fourth.
GB coasted to the 81-57 win after trading baskets with UDM in the fourth. GB outscored the Titans 19-18 in the frame.
