(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) DE PERE – St. Norbert College opened the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association’s Harris Cup Playoffs with a convincing 5-2 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin in the first of two quarterfinal games at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (18-6-2), ranked No. 5 in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll, broke loose from the Falcons thanks to two power-play goals.
St. Norbert struck first at 8:44 in the first period from Ethan Byrne but was quickly rebuked by a Concordia goal less than a minute later at 9:42 to make it 1-1. Calvin Hanson got the Green Knights back in the lead on a power play at 13:44 to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Trevor Mitchell (pictured) made it 3-1 just after the first intermission at 4:30 in the second period. The Falcons responded to the setback with a goal at 9:07. The Green Knights held just the one goal lead until Hanson scored his second of the night at 3:31 in the third. Blake Ulve added a fifth goal on a St. Norbert power play near the end of the game with under 10 seconds remaining.
Ulve finished the night with one goal and two assists for three points, while Hanson had two goals for two points. Logan Dombrowsky had two assists for two points and Byrne had one goal and an assist for two points as did Mitchell.
St. Norbert outshot the Falcons 29-21. Hunter Garvey made 19 saves for the Green Knights while Blake Hazelton made 24 stops for the Falcons.
The Green Knights were 2-for-4 on the power play. Concordia was 0-for-1.
