(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) – SEATTLE, Wash. –The Green Bay women’s basketball team took a 65-56 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 79-74 to the Washington Huskies on the road Saturday.
The Phoenix (8-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Jenna Guyer, who had 19 points and eight rebounds. Maddy Skorupski added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals, and Meghan Schultz helped out with 13 points. Carley Duffney also finished the day with 13 points.
Green Bay shared the ball well in Saturday’s game, racking up 17 assists on 28 made field goals. Kamy Peppler’s nine assists led the Phoenix.
Sayvia Sellers led Washington with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 16-15, Green Bay went on a 6-0 run with 1:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Guyer, to take a 21-16 lead. The Phoenix then lost some of that lead but still entered the quarter break with a 23-20 advantage.
Washington rallied to take a 31-29 lead before Green Bay went on a 7-0 run starting at the 5:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Schultz, to take a 36-31 lead. The Huskies cut into that lead, but the Phoenix still enjoyed a 42-40 advantage heading into halftime. Green Bay dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Green Bay continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Carley Duffney, to expand its lead further to 53-44 with 5:48 to go in the third. The Phoenix held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 65-56 edge. Green Bay knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 23 total points.
Washington then erased the Green Bay lead in the game’s final quarter for a 79-74 comeback victory. The Huskies outscored the Phoenix 23-9 in the frame.
