Girls team tennis
Brookfield East won its second straight Division 1 championship, and Shorewood captured the Division title at the 2025 State Girls Team Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Center Saturday.
The second-seeded Spartans (23-2) rolled to a 6-1 victory over second-seeded Neenah (21-3) in the Division 1 championship match.
Brookfield East swept all four singles matches. Caroline Raster won her #1 singles flight match for the Spartans after winning the State individual title last week. Natalia Martinez won at the #2 position, and Lily Sun and Samantha Behling won their matches at the #3 and #4 flights, respectively. The tandems of Zoja Selak and Adi Sangowdar, and Evelyn Schuenke and Dylan Szesterniak contributed to the victory by winning their matches at #2 and #3 doubles, respectively.
The Spartans’ consecutive titles account for the programs’ overall number of titles won. It was their 10th State Tournament appearance. The Spartans defeated Westosha Central 6-1 in the quarterfinals Friday and blanked Eau Claire Memorial 7-0 in the semifinals earlier Saturday to advance to the final. The Rockets defeated Verona 6-1 in the quarterfinals and beat University School of Milwaukee 5-2 in the semifinals to advance to the title match and finish runner-up in their 22nd State appearance.
In Division 2, fourth-seeded Shorewood (19-8-1) cruised to a 6-1 win over third-seeded Altoona (19-6) in the title match. The Greyhounds won their first title in their first-ever State Tournament appearance.
Shorewood won three of the four singles matches. Misa Herriges earned the victory at #1 singles after placing third last week at the individual championships. Milja Aguirre was victorious at the #2 singles flight, and Sophia Eckman contributed with a win at #3 singles. The Greyhounds swept the doubles matches. Kennedy Merkel and Katya Velikanov earned their win at the #1 position. Evelyn Schuurman and Alaina Tautges won at #2 doubles, while the duo of Elinor Cincotta and Elsa Oldenburg won at #3 doubles.
Shorewood advanced to the championship match with a 5-2 upset of top-seeded Edgewood in the semifinal. Altoona upset third-seeded St. Mary Catholic in the semifinals to earn its berth in the championship game. It was the Railroaders’ eighth State appearance.
