APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Mountains of donations are stacked up at the Appleton Area School District Welcome Center, all for district students and families facing homelessness.
Molly McGregor says the need is great.
“This year, we started all of our outreach and we’re already at over 300 students experiencing homelessness,” she said.
At the end of last school year, over 600 students qualified for homelessness support, and according to McGregor, that number will continue to grow.
“We’re seeing a huge need of especially numbers of families who are residing in hotels, unsheltered, and just in different circumstances, has definitely increased over the last few years,” she said.
These donations are typically collected year-round. Now, they’re ahead of schedule.
I have a traffic of families that come in every week, and so I said, ‘Let’s take care of them this weekend.’ I anticipated 50 bags being put together, and now I think we’ll be set for quite some time.
Those donating included young Ruby Schmidt, who said it’s to keep the “Be Kind” mentality.
“We got all these donations and brought them here,” Schmidt said. “I’m hoping to help people and to change people’s day and lives.”
The school district is still accepting donations. Those interested can drop off at the address below:
