GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Monday marked the beginning of new safety measures at Green Bay schools.
Clear backpacks are now mandatory along with new disciplinary protocols in grades 6 through 12.
On Monday, community members spoke at the school board meeting.
They said they appreciated the efforts to enhance safety.
Two weeks ago, a gun was found in a backpack at Preble High.
Everyone agrees, more needs to be done, and quickly.
“We don’t have the gift of time here, right? We should react with urgency. It doesn’t have to be a perfect plan. Let’s start making progress, let’s not be afraid to try some things,” said Nicole Strohman, a parent of a student at Preble.
“The school wants to be partner in resolving this, but we certainly can’t do it alone. So, those partnerships are going to be critical in our decision making moving forward,” said Superintendent Vicki Bayer.
In addition to the comments made, one Preble student brought attention to the idea that bullying may be a critical factor in the motive for violence in schools.
“What we need to tackle the most with this is the motive. I said this before, and I will stick to it. If people don’t have a reason to bring a gun to school, they won’t,” said Jaxon Degrave, a sophomore at Preble.
Data was gathered last week, during a safety roundtable. It will be presented to the board members, at the meeting on October 13.
