OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A teenage boy has been charged in connection with an Oshkosh shooting that took place over the weekend.
17-year-old Vautrell Section, who will be a senior in high school this year, made his initial court appearance Thursday. He faces seven counts, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
According to the Oshkosh Police Department, around 2 p.m. Saturday, officers received reports of gunfire in the area of Central St. and W. Irving Ave. After canvassing the area, authorities found the victim, a 20-year-old man, with a gunshot wound to his arm.
Police determined the shooting took place in the 600 block of Franklin Street.
Prosecuting attorney Wyatt Reinke asked for Section’s bond to be set at $250,000 cash.
“The defendant, at just 17 years old, has a history of gun violence and weapons charges as both a juvenile and now as an adult. The defendant is already on bond for firing a handgun amongst a group of teenagers in a residential area. We’re here now as he shot multiple shots from a handgun during the middle of the day in a residential neighborhood. One of those shots struck a victim,” Reinke said.
The defendant was not even supposed to be possessing a firearm as it relates to his bond conditions… and the fact that he’s only 17 years old. The state believes there is a significant public protection aspect to this case and believe that a high cash bond is necessary to protect the public.
Section’s lawyer, Garrett Kerr, said his client requested a bail around $10,000.
“He does understand the importance of a cash bond in this situation, but just taking into account his ability to pay, given his age and his lack of time to accumulate the funds necessary to pay that kind of bail,” said Section’s attorney Garrett Kerr.
Court Commissioner Eric Heywood ultimately set a $200,000 cash bond.
“I do have concerns about the significant ongoing risk that Mr. Section poses to the public,” Heywood said.
Section will return to court for further proceedings Aug. 21 and then again Aug. 25 for a preliminary hearing.
