FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Milwaukee man suspected of driving drunk the wrong way on a Fond du Lac street was arrested after a pursuit.
It all started just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Ripon police officer who was handling an unrelated matter, notified Fond du Lac County dispatch of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on S. Macy Street near W. 1st Street. The vehicle was also seen without headlights or taillights.
About five minutes later, a Fond du Lac police officer spotted the vehicle near E. Johnson Street and N. National Avenue. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over but he driver continued at or near the speed limit.
The vehicle eventually turned onto Elm Acres Drive, a circular residential street off E. Johnson Street. Additional officers responded to the scene and gave multiple verbal commands to the driver, which he ignored, and the suspect began slowly driving around the loop of Elm Acres Drive. An officer deployed a tire deflation device (stop sticks), puncturing at least one tire. Despite this, the suspect continued to drive away.
A second deployment of stop sticks by another officer at Morningside Drive and E. 2nd Street was successful. The pursuit ended when a Fond du Lac County deputy did a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver in the 1000 block of Bluehill Avenue, bringing the vehicle to a stop. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The 32-year-old man was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before he was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail.
The pursuit lasted approximately 14 minutes and covered about 2.5 miles. Throughout the incident, the suspect drove at or near the speed limit and obeyed traffic signals.
Charges being forwarded to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office include felony fleeing and eluding, as well as misdemeanor resisting an officer. The suspect also received a citation for first-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI).
