FISH CREEK, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An effort to improve the arts and culture experience is underway in Door County.
Officials broke ground Monday morning for a new annex building at the Door Community Auditorium.
With about 40,000 people going through the doors each year at Gibraltar School’s Door Community Auditorium, Board President Martha Luber Pelrine says space can be at a premium.
“Our office is pretty tiny across the street in the auditorium, and you can’t ask a public school to add on for you. So we started looking around, and this is really the only property that fulfills our needs,” said Luber Pelrine.
Door Community Auditorium Executive Director Cari Lewis says a new annex building across the road will have room to learn — and that’s not all.
“It will be intimate venue space, gathering hall, education center for children to have music lessons. And a place where folks can socialize before and after our shows at the auditorium. This helps us improve our patron experience by being able to have beer and wine before a show. Being on school grounds, we’ve not been able to serve beer and wine,” said Lewis.
Officials say fundraising continues for the $5.5 million project. Luber Pelrine says a new annex is expected to compliment culture in the community.
“Door County is an arts destination. The arts and music. Our summer season is filled with free music and music-ticketed events. We’re sort of turning into a destination for that, which is exciting,” she said.
If all goes according to plan, officials say the new Door Community Auditorium annex building could open in spring 2026.
