(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s basketball team received the No. 3 seed in the East Region and will face 14-seeded Montana in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 20 at Ball Arena in Denver, Colo. Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. CT, live on TNT.
The Badgers are making their 28th trip to the Big Dance overall and are one of five schools to appear in 24 of the last 26 NCAA tournaments.
Wisconsin will play in Denver for the first time in its NCAA Tournament history. The last time two times the Badgers landed in the East Region, UW made the Sweet 16 (2015-16, 2016-17).
Badgers coach Greg Gard is not concerned about playing at Denver’s altitude.
Gard also said that they can’t be upset about not getting to play in Milwaukee.
Gard added that the guys have had a heck of a year, a lot of basketball left to play.
Now it’s on to prepping for Montana. The Badgers will take on No. 14 Montana, the Big Sky Conference Tournament champion. Wisconsin took on the Grizzlies in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, winning 73-49 as a No. 4 seed. The Badgers reached the Sweet 16 that season, eventually falling to Syracuse. UW is 3-0 all-time against Montana.
Gard talked about the Grizzlies.
Gard said that in the Big Ten Tournament, he thinks they got their bite back defensively in the tournament.
Wisconsin is 40-26 (.606) all-time in the NCAA tournament, reaching four Final Fours and 10 Sweet 16s. The Badgers have made the Sweet 16 in six of the last nine NCAA tournaments. The Badgers have made the NCAA tournament’s second weekend in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 during that stretch
The winner of the first-round matchup will face the winner of a game between No. 6 seed BYU and No. 10 seed VCU in the round of 32 on Saturday, March 22.
