DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — St. Norbert College plans to honor its first African American graduate — a man who went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters — by naming a basketball court for him.
Chuck Holton starred in basketball and track at St. Norbert. He graduated in 1952. Holton played with the Globetrotters for six years, then returned to his hometown of Milwaukee, where he worked as director of health and human services for Milwaukee County and the executive director of Milwaukee’s House of Peace.
Holton died last year at age 91.
A ceremony to name Chuck’s Court in the Ray Van Den Heuvel Campus Center is set for Sept. 7.
St. Norbert has also created the Holton Endowed Scholarship, which will be earmarked for students from historically underrepresented populations.
