GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The first court hearing in the lawsuit filed over the use of audio surveillance at Green Bay city hall is set for Thursday.
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich maintains the surveillance is for security purposes. Green Bay Police Chief, Chris Davis, says they don’t have much involvement in the surveillance system.
“That was a decision at the city level that was indented to deal with really negative encounters that city staff had with people.” said Chief Davis.
However, the Shift Commander’s desk at the police department does have 24/7 real time access to the camera and audio surveillance. Additionally, some of the Police Department’s IT employees share work with the city’s IT department. Chief Davis said they may have provided some technical assistance.
While the police department would be able to go back to obtain previous recordings, it would be a process to pass constitutional muster and to prove it was legally obtained.
