GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is home to several apprenticeship programs, which allows students to work and learn simultaneously.
Bill Sandberg’s son is a senior. He’s interested in some of the apprenticeship programs at NWTC.
“He’s really interested in doing something in the trades, he doesn’t quite know what. He likes woodworking, he likes metal, welding,” Sandberg said.
Sandberg, who is also a technical education teacher in the area, tells FOX 11 there are a lot of opportunities for trade workers right now.
“There’s such a shortage of skilled labor. Not just here in Wisconsin, but all over the US.”
“So much of our infrastructure in our society is built by apprentices, and a lot of them are retiring now so we need new apprentices in the fields working. Everybody needs plumbers, electricians, all of these different people who build our communities,” NWTC apprenticeship coordinator Christina Jungwirth said.
Jungwirth tells FOX 11 apprenticeships across the state is growing. The technical college offers programs in construction and manufacturing.
“The state is putting in a lot of emphasis on it because they see it as something that we need to do too to help build our communities and keep them going.”
“They want to just get their hands on and do and this gives them an opportunity to just jump right out of high school and start working and doing something they love and not be tied into a classroom anymore,” Sandberg said.
