GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A new report shows that obesity among kids aged 10 to 17 is up in Wisconsin.
The report showed that 14.5% of kids in that age range were obese.
It’s something that Bellin Health pediatrician Dr. Simone Warrack tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve seen a big change in the amount of activity that children have been participating in during the last year,” Warrack told WTAQ. “They were more isolated, weren’t in school, and weren’t able to participate in many sports or activities.”
There is good news that comes with the return of class.
“We’ve already seen some improvement,” said Warrack. “Now that some of my patients have been going back to school, they’ve been more active, walking to school and participating in sports.”
She suggests families eat meals together and do more healthy family activities, such as going on walks. Wisconsin is the 27th ranked state in the country for obesity in that age group.
