OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a person who is calling residents, claiming to be a deputy, and demanding money for an open court case.
The department has taken multiple calls about the scammer this morning.
Today, the phone number of 920-727-2888 is showing up on caller ID, and it looks like a legitimate call. The scammer is identifying himself as Lieutenant Rice, which is the name of an actual employee with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
The department reminds citizens that they never make calls like this, and to alert elderly or vulnerable friends and family of the scam.
They also offered a special kudos to employees at the Oshkosh Community Credit Union today, who were able to convince a customer that she was about to fall victim to a scam, and to call police instead.
