MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A campaign to permanently operate the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Manitowoc is 75% done with its fundraising goal.
The Eternal Flame campaign started in 2018, and organizers are looking to raise $200,000 total.
It came after city and county officials realized the money for the upkeep would soon be depleted.
The City of Manitowoc contributed $50,000 earlier this year.
“Expenses are probably anywhere from three to 5,000 every year. A good year with gas prices low, maybe only around 3,000. But then there’s always some maintenance,” Manitowoc County UNited Veterans Council Chairman Tom Hoffman said.
The eternal flame was lit on Memorial Day 51 years ago.
It sits on an island right in the middle of Manitowoc Boulevard.
