SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Deer hunters will get the chance to bag a deer at Suamico’s Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve. The permit only event runs from August 1st through the 15th.
Trails at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve close for 9 days in November. Then, park ranger Ben Schuurmans tells FOX 11 the hunt is on.
“People have been wanting to deer hunt out here for awhile. We like to do it here just to keep the deer population in check. Since, it is a preserve for water fowl, the deer don’t get bothered too much, so they kind of like this area.”
A limited number of permits are issued to hunters randomly.
“Usually I’m the one plucking it from a hat, it’s about as random as you can get, haha.”
Schuurmans says the few that are chosen could see many deer. A more urban deer that isn’t so skittish.
“The success rate is fairly good. I know a lot of people see some deer, obviously it depends on the time of year, but usually people are pretty satisfied with the amount of deer they see.”
By November these hiking trails will be closed off and marked with orange fencing. Then, a lucky group of around 40 hunters will roam free.
Organizers say anyone interested should call 920 434 2824 and leave their name, phone number and address.
