DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The season is underway for picking sweet cherries in parts of our area.
The red berries are becoming a favorite for many to eat right off the branches.
At Roberston Orchards of Door County, about a dozen different sweet cherry varieties grow in a two-acre area. The season started over the weekend.
“It’s really popular. People just love coming out here and picking their own. And the best part about picking your own, is that you get to sample while you’re picking,” said Skipp Roberston, Robertson Orchards of Door County Owner.
Robertson tells FOX 11 says the sweet cherries ripen about a week ahead of the familiar tart cherries. He says the tarts are typically used in baking, but the sweets are made for eating.
“It’s like a tasty treat. It’s like nature’s best candy.”
Phil Puestow and his wife Mary Puestow made a four-hour trip from Tomahawk, to pick some Door County Cherries.
“Just the flavor. Just the size. The juice. They’re beautiful to work with. What are you going to do with them? Eat them,” said Phil Puestow, Tomahawk.
“Besides eat them. Freeze some. Bake something. I’ve never baked with sweet cherries so that will be fun to try. But maybe some jams. Share them with our daughter,” said Mary Puestow.
Robertson says his cherry trees may have suffered some frost damage earlier in the spring, but he says the berries are looking better, and he expects an average harvest this year.
Robertson Orchards is located just south of Sturgeon Bay. They hope to offer pick-your-own sweet cherries all week.
